Overview

The 2019 Toyota Camry is a compelling entry in the family-sedan class, one that can compete on more than its reputation for flawless reliability and great resale value. With an extremely fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine and an available hybrid version, it appeals to the eco-friendly crowd. Although its performance pales in comparison with sportier rivals such as the Honda Accord and the Mazda 6, the Toyota Camry has a comfortable ride and competent handling. And there's more: Toyota's commitment to providing heaps of standard driver-assistance technology holds firm. While there are several minor shortcomings, there's no mistaking that the 2019 Camry has been reborn.

XSE PERFORMANCE AT LIGHTNING LAP 2019

The Camry's 3:25.3 is perfectly respectable for a family sedan on low-grip all-season tires. With stability control that can't be fully defeated, it held only 0.78 g in Turn 1. Provided you don't go into corners with a head full of Senna, the Camry comports itself with good body control and a suspension that doesn't seem to notice when you're riding the curbing. A Camry lap is an exercise in perfecting the racing line and not overstressing tires or brakes. Let the 301-hp six do its thing and it'll pull all the way to 123.5 mph on the front straight. Now would you look at that? It entered the uphill esses nearly 2 mph faster than the Miata RF.

A few more seconds could come off the Camry's lap, but throttle applications at corner exit are met with the sort of reluctance you'd expect from a brand that's been accused of unintended acceleration.
